BioScience Bead Products for Cell Separation & Purification by Affinity Chromatography

Note: Unusually large agarose beads ( 250-350 µ ) are required for optimal cell affinity chromatography applications in order to avoid the physical trapping of cells between adjacent beads - rather than “trapping “ cells as a result of their affinity to the ligand on the beads. See theory and practice section below for further details.

Note: bead size is 250-350 μ for all products in this table; also, agarose concentration is either 4% (A-4B) or 6% (A- 6B) as indicated.

Theory & Practice of Cell Affinity Chromatography

Like all affinity chromatography, the separation of only one component of a complex mixture - from all the other components- is based on the target component’s unique affinity for the ligand attached to the affinity beads. When the use of such affinity techniques involves cells, large subcellular particles (organelles), viruses, bacteria, latices or other such cellular biologicals, then Macro- Agarose Beads are the medium of choice for attaching your ligand. Agarose beads are known to have negligible non-specific binding to virtually any biological. When the agarose bead diameter is sufficiently large ( i.e. 250-350 µ for most applications) then physical trapping of unwanted mixture components is prevented and only the desired target substances or cells bind to the ligand and are subsequently purified.
